12th Annual Kean University Gala

GMBA
Na Cui
The Kean University Gala comes as usual, but this time it is held in the Ellis Island which is the nation’s premier immigration station. It is said more than 40% of America’s population can trace their ancestry through this island. Before we aboard the ferry, I came across one of my classmates, she told me that she came to find her grandpa’ name on the Memorial to America’s Immigrants where more than 600,000 names are inscribed. It’s a meaningful and significant trip for her. To me, the same thing, after strolling the ground and the spectacular sites of the Immigrant Museum, I could learn and understand more about American history.

During this spectacular evening, the special guest Paul Rusesabagina, who saved more than 1,200 people during the Rwandan Genocide in 1994 and his heroism inspired the Oscar-nominated film—Hotel Rwanda, gave us a passionate and enlightening speech. His words and actions encourage us to think about what the meaning of human rights is. And we live on the world not only for ourselves, there are more people need our help and consideration. The Human Rights Institute at Kean University which will open in fall 2009 aims to promote the awareness of human rights issues and violations across the globe, to teach and educate the public at large acting on the behalf of powerless.

This is really a fabulous and meaningful party which is worthy of everybody’s participation. You will have an opportunity to meet and communicate with faculties, staff and students from different apartments, to see how well Kean University positioned itself to make a significant impact on tomorrow’s leaders, and most importantly, you’ll become very proud of to be a Keaner.
